💻 How to Install and Run N8N on Your PC in Minutes

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to install N8N locally on your PC using Docker. The entire setup takes just a few minutes, and once you're done, you’ll have a fully working N8N automation environment running directly on your machine.

STEP 1: Install Docker Desktop

Go to the official Docker website and download Docker Desktop for your operating system. Docker acts like a clean, isolated box that gives N8N everything it needs to run without touching or breaking anything on your system. The installation only takes a few seconds. After it completes, close the window and restart your PC if Docker asks for it. Once you're back, open Docker Desktop, accept the agreement, select the recommended settings, and skip sign-in. When you see the main dashboard, Docker is ready.

STEP 2: Download the n8n Image

With Docker running, search for “n8n” in the search bar or open the Images tab. Select the official n8nio/n8n image, which is marked as a verified publisher, and click Pull. Docker will begin downloading the image, and once complete, it will appear in your local Images list.

STEP 3: Configure and Run the Container

Open the Images tab and find the n8nio/n8n entry you pulled. Click Run and expand the optional settings. Name the container something like my-n8n. Set the port mapping so that both the host port and container port are 5678. This port is what allows you to access the n8n dashboard from your browser. Start the container, and Docker will launch your personal n8n server.

STEP 4: Create Your Admin Account

Open your browser and go to http://localhost:5678. You’ll see the n8n onboarding screen. Create your owner account with an email and password. Since everything is running locally, your data stays on your machine.

After signing in, you’ll land on the full n8n canvas with unlimited workflow executions and complete control over your automations.
